Love Letters Card Game

Me and my sister love a good card game. We were recently at Thirsty Meeples Board Game Cafe in Oxford and we were recommended Love Letter by one of the game gurus.

A great Card game based on Strategy and Luck!

Love Letter is a fun card game that combines strategy and luck. The game is based on the stories from the Tempest. The aim of the game is to win the heart of the Royal Princess Annette by getting your love letter to her. The game is for 2-4 players ages 10 and up. Some slightly younger children might get the game, but it is definitely not for the under 5’s. Four seems to be the perfect number of players for this game.

Why I love the Card Game Love Letters

  • It is based on a combination of strategy and luck.
  • I love the story behind the game.
  • It is enjoyably competitive as you get to look at your opponents cards or play cards to get them out.
  • This game is good value.
  • Makes a great party game.

How do you Play the Card Game Love Letters?

Everyone is dealt two cards at the beginning. Also, for set up, take the top card and place it out of play face down. This is to make the guessing of cards more difficult during the game.

There are a series of rounds, and each round represents a day in the Royal Court. Each card has a value from 1-8 and the idea is to discard cards and then do the action on the card you have discarded to get other players out and get your love letter closer to Princess Annette. There are only sixteen cards and you will have two in your hand at a time.

Depending on which card you discard, the action attached to that card will be positive or negative. You could get your opponent to swap cards with you, discard their hand or let you have a sneaky peek! Remember, if you discard the guard card, then you must guess another players hand. If you guess correctly, they mist discard their card! Sound complicated? Don’t worry – you will have a prompt card in front of you that lets you know the values and actions attached to each of the cards.

Winning the Game

The last person in at the end of the round is the winner. If there are two people still in at the end, the person with the highest hand wins that round. The winner of the round gets a token of love from the princess. There are 13 tokens, so it is the first to four, but this depends on the number of players in the game.
